XVR
What's the difference?
The key differences between NVRs and XVRs revolve around the type of cameras they support and AI capabilities.
NVRs, being more modern, often provide greater flexibility, integration and can perform more demanding tasks such as ANPR and face recognition.
XVRs on the other hand, hybrid DVRs which also support IP cameras, are generally associated with analogue cameras and offer a more traditional solution which only requires video recording. As such XVRs tend to be cheaper than NVRs. IP cameras can be added to XVRs as additional cameras, however, they lose a lot of their AI capabilities which rely on the more powerful NVR hardware.
Video Input:
- NVRs process and record video data from IP cameras, which are connected directly to the recorder or connected to a network. This allows for greater flexibility in terms of placement and scalability, as cameras can be located anywhere on the same network.
AI Functionality:
- As NVRs tend to be more powerful than their XVR counterparts they can handle more advanced AI functions like ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) and face recognition.
Easy Installation & Scalability:
IP systems are usually easier to install as they can be added onto existing networks and powered via PoE (Power over Ethernet). Even when installing a new network, a single network lead to each camera handles the data and power.
Multiple nearby cameras can feed back to a PoE switch so that all data is combined and sent to the recorder or another switch down one cable. This makes expanding the system at a later date a breeze as additional cameras can be connected to the network using a single network lead.
Video Input:
- Cameras are connected to XVRs with a BNC lead which has been the industry standard on analogue cameras for many years now. This twist on design which locks onto the plug creates a secure connection which can handle up to 4K images just like NVRs.
Budget Friendly:
- XVRs are designed more as a traditional CCTV system who's primary function is to simply record footage and offer basic monitoring capabilities. As they don’t have the processing power and extra functionality of NVRs the price of XVRs is noticeably cheaper.

Additional IP Cameras:
- One common issue in CCTV is a customer asking for an additional camera when all camera inputs are already taken. On an NVR your only option would be to buy a larger recorder. On our XVRs you have the option of adding additional IP cameras.
As a rule of thumb our XVRs can take half the number of analogue video channels again as additional IP cameras. For example a 4 channel XVR can take 4 analogue cameras and 2 IP cameras simultaneously. This handy feature can get you out of a pickle if additional cameras are required.
