Major number plate change makes it easier for ANPR Cameras to read the plate

Motorists face significant changes to number plates from the beginning of next month when the new "22" comes out, making it even easier for Automatic Number Plate Recognition Cameras like the RoboPLATE to read the plate.

A major overhaul of vehicle number plates is set to take place next month. From March new cars will have the “22” registration tag and then in September number plates will have a "72" until February 28, 2023.

They will also follow the 2021 new rules which meant that they will be “BS AU 145e” standard plates that meet the new British Standard for Retroreflective Number Plates. The plates are made from a tougher material which makes them more resistant to abrasion and other damage.

Number plates can now only display solid black lettering as two-tone plates that used different shades to create a 3D or 4D effect have been banned, reported the Express. The lettering can still be Perspex or acrylic lettering, provided it meets all other requirements. This change was made to make it easier for Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras to read the plate.

They will have to also include the supplier’s business name and postcode, along with the name of the number plate manufacturer, The Mirror reported.
