DVRs

A Digital Video Recorder or DVR represents the heart of a CCTV system.

It houses the hard drive where the camera footage is recorded, allows user control over live CCTV images and recordings and even allows the camera images to be viewed on a monitor or remotely via a mobile phone app or a desktop client software.

DVRs accept CCTV cameras fed via CO-AX cable as opposed to an NVR (Network Video Recorder) that works over a network where IP cameras can be connected directly to the recorder or piggyback over a network connection to reach it.

DVRs are good for upgrades where existing cable runs of RG59 are already in place or you do not wish to go down the IP route.

Formatting Hard Drives There are a few occasions when you might want to format a hard drive. You may want to wipe all footage off a current hard drive or you may have a new hard drive.

What internet speed do I need stream live video from a Zip DVR?
The quality of image you can stream depends on your available bandwidth and the bit rate of the live images you are trying to view. For best results we recommend setting the DVR/NVR's sub-stream to CIF @ 12fps which requires 256kb/s per channel in live view.

If you have a high speed internet connection you can increase the stream quality and frame rate to suit your needs. A 720p 12fps image for example would require roughly 2MB/s per channel.
